Andrew Bowker is recognised as one of New Zealand’s pioneers in laparoscopic surgery, due to his work with cholecystectomy (removing the gall bladder), herniorrhaphy (repairing hernias) and combating acid reflux.
Andrew was involved in general surgical laparoscopy from the outset, when he was a consultant surgeon in Queensland. He has since garnered the largest hernia series in Australasia. He teaches laparoscopic procedures to local surgeons through his busy private practice in Auckland, and has presented on his surgical experience in the field both locally and internationally. Although trained as a general surgeon, he now specialises in laparoscopic surgery and no longer performs many procedures associated with general surgery.
Since 1993, he has run a full-time private practice in Auckland, New Zealand.
Laparoscopy Auckland is a surgical hospital specifically designed to cater for laparoscopic surgical procedures. It is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment and is able to accommodate patients for overnight stay. It was officially opened by the former Governor General, Dame Sylvia Cartwright, in March 2001. It is the only surgical unit in New Zealand to focus chiefly on laparoscopic surgery.
Andrew Bowker works closely with the other surgeon, John Dunn, who is also recognised as one of New Zealand’s pioneering laparoscopic surgeons. Associate Professor Jonathan Koea has also joined the unit's surgical team.
